Mesa's Proud History and Industry
Mesa's history is one of the oldest in the country. At least 2,000 years ago, the area was settled by the Hohokam people, whose sophisticated canal system led the new world in agricultural technology; amazingly, many canals are still in use today. Until 1960, more than half of Mesa's residents made their living through farming, mostly cotton and citrus. The agricultural tradition dwindled substantially in later decades as Mesa attracted more commerce and industry. Health facilities and education have seen marked growth.
