Oakland underwent a significant period of revitalization during the 2000s which saw new housing and other developments transform its more run-down areas. As a result, Oakland has become an increasingly popular place to live and work, helped by the stunning views over San Francisco and the Bay from its hillside neighborhoods, its Mediterranean climate, its abundant parks, the excellent transportation system, its vibrant lakefront and waterfront, the diverse shopping and dining opportunities, and the many cultural experiences and sporting and outdoor events and facilities Oakland has to offer.

Music is a big part of Oakland's nightlife. There's a thriving blues scene, and jazz, rock and all kinds of other music can be enjoyed at bars and venues across the city. Much of the city's nightlife focuses on the clubs, movie theaters and restaurants around Jack London Square, which is also home to the world-class jazz venue Yoshi's.

Cultural events include the monthly "Oakland Art Murmur" event that showcases new artwork, and several annual festivals such as the Laurel Street Fair, Oakland Holiday Parade, the Monclair Jazz and Wine Festival, and the Chinatown Streetfest, to name just a few.
