Colorado Springs founder General William Palmer showed remarkable prescience when, in the summer of 1871, he established the city with hopes of making it a cutting-edge resort community. Because, throughout the years and the economic changes brought about by the gold rush and several military installations, Colorado Springs has remained at its core a playground of breathtaking natural beauty.

Given the mythically-named landmarks that surround this mile-high city--Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Seven Falls, and Cave of the Winds--matters hardly could have turned out otherwise. Indeed, Colorado Springs has long been heralded as a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts who visit and often even relocate to the city for its mild year-round temperatures and near endless opportunities for biking, hiking, rafting, horseback riding, fishing, and hot air ballooning.

When the people of Colorado Springs go to work, they most often do so in the booming industries of the military, the high-tech sector of the economy, and tourism. The defense industry boasts a long and lucrative history in Colorado Springs, and today's military contingent focuses primarily on aerospace and missile defense. Colorado Springs' many high-tech industries include:
  •   Verizon
  •   Hewlett-Packard
  •   Intel
  •   SINA

The service sector of the city's economy is also experiencing notable growth.
