Indiana Colleges & Universities

Known as the "Crossroads of America," Indiana is home to around 140 college and university campuses that offer students a range of educational options they can put to work in the state's increasingly diverse economy.

Indiana Colleges and Universities Offer Students an Affordable and Competitive Education
Indiana's higher education system is growing. In 2008, the state unveiled an ambitious plan to put Indiana colleges and universities at the forefront of U.S. higher education.

Indiana Schools: Growing Opportunities in Growth Industries
By 2010, the state's "Reaching Higher" plan calls for Indiana's colleges and universities to:
  •   Rank as the most affordable among peer states.
  •   Produce the equivalent of 10,000 additional bachelor's degrees per year through 2025.
  •   Be in the top half of Midwestern states in academic research and development expenditures.

The Hoosier State has seen dramatic increases in college and university enrollment in recent years. It now ranks 10th in the United States among secondary students who go on to study at Indiana universities and colleges, up from 34th in 1992.

Investments in Indiana colleges and universities called for in "Reaching Higher" are designed to attract talented and committed students and faculty and serve growing state industries such as pharmaceutical and hi-tech.

Commerce and Manufacturing Top Indiana's Employment Opportunities
With a population of 6.4 million, the state ranks number one in the most interstate highway commerce among U.S. states and also boasts three international airports and the world's second-largest FedEx hub.

Manufacturing is Indiana's state's top industry, employing one-quarter of its workforce at an average salary of $70,000. As the home of Eli Lilly and Company and other pharmaceutical companies, Indiana also has the country's second-largest share of total pharmaceutical workforce. Healthcare employs another 11 percent of the state's workers, at average annual wages of about $44,000.

Indiana's capital, Indianapolis, is also its largest city, with about 800,000 residents, and offers some of the state's best-paying jobs. Other major cities include Fort Wayne, Evansville, South Bend, and the Chicago exburbs of Gary and Hammond.
