Kansas' economy is driven by agriculture and manufacturing. According to the Kansas Statistical Abstract 2008, Kansas ranked first nationally in the production of milled wheat flour and second in wheat production in 2007. The state is also a leader in grain sorghum and beef production and ranks among the top 10 states in farm product exports. The export of airplanes and other aircraft, however, is the top revenue generator in Kansas. Oil production is also a factor in Kansas' dynamic economy, according to the Kansas Statistical Abstract from 2008.

Kansas has many large metropolitan areas. Wichita is the largest city in the state with a mean annual wage estimate of $38,350 across occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Kansas City, with over 145,000 residents, has the highest mean annual wage at $42,340, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. The highest paying jobs in the state are management, legal, architecture and engineering, computers, and healthcare.
