Michigan Colleges and Universities: Train for Careers in Emerging Industries

Michigan is the only U.S. state made up entirely of two peninsulas: a lower peninsula (which residents call "the mitten" because of its shape) and the upper peninsula (known as The U.P.). The peninsulas--which sit in the middle of four out of the five Great Lakes--are linked together by the Mackinac Bridge, one of the world's longest suspension bridges.

Michigan: Center of U.S. Auto World

Despite the U.S. auto industry's troubles, Michigan remains the center of automobile manufacturing in the United States. Michigan also leads in manufacturing prepared cereals, airplane parts, chemicals, machine tools, refrigerators, furniture and hardware.

The state ranks 4th nationally in high tech workers and comes in at 7th for its share of scientific and engineering jobs. Still, Michigan's statewide unemployment (as of November 2009) is at 14.7 percent, higher than the national average of 10 percent, due to the extensive auto industry layoffs and outsourcing of manufacturing jobs abroad.

Emerging Industries in Michigan

Michigan's bright spots are the new emerging industries: film-making, green technology, homeland security, and defense work. The state's attempt to become the "Hollywood of the North" is gaining traction: figures from the Michigan Film Office report that a total of 50 projects were filmed in the state in 2009, including the movie "Up in the Air," which featured George Clooney and was shot on location at a Detroit airport.
