Minneapolis: Where Art, Nature, and Industry Converge

Most folks are tempted to classify themselves as either city people (forward-thinking lovers of culture and nightlife) or country people (outdoor enthusiasts finely attuned to life's simpler pleasures). Even the millions who live in suburbs identify more strongly with one group than another. Yet for those who demand the best of both worlds, there exist a few havens of urban and wild juxtaposition. Continued from top

Minneapolis is surrounded by both banks of the Mississippi River, just north of where that river joins the Minnesota River. The city grew up around towering Saint Anthony Falls, whose hydropower was largely responsible for Minneapolis' long success in the milling and lumber industries. Plenty of Minneapolis' natural beauty has been conserved conserved in parkland, and today's residents enjoy 22 lakes, 170 parks, and poplar picnic destination Minnehaha Falls. All this makes for a city teeming with recreational activities, such as cycling, swimming, fishing, cross country skiing, boating, golfing, and running.

As mentioned earlier, Minneapolis offers students much more than just a sprawling playground. The city boasts a proud history combining industry, progressive civil rights, and thriving cultural attractions. Second only to New York City in live theater per capita, Minneapolis offers spectacular opportunities to take in the arts at its many museums, galleries, and music venues. Unique festivals dot the calendar year-round.

The Minneapolis economy is rooted primarily in commerce, finance, rail/trucking services, and health care. Smaller industries such as publishing, high technology, and graphic arts round out the mix. Minneapolis leads the country in technological advancements, featuring levels of Wi-Fi availability, university research, and energy conservation that far exceed the national average.
