Industrial Center Becomes an Art Mecca

Well-known as a center for shipping, railroad, and manufacturing jobs, Jersey City's economy entered a period of decline in the 1970s and 1980s, as the availability of these types of jobs began to decline. By the 1980s, the city had lost a significant number of jobs and residents. However, a concerted revitalization and redevelopment effort that involved turning many abandoned industrial docks into tourism-friendly properties began to turn things around for Jersey City by the late 1980s. Attracted by relatively affordable housing prices, artists began to flock to the area during the same period, creating a cultural renaissance that has transformed the city.

Student-Friendly Activities Abound
Whether your idea of fun is strolling through high-end galleries or spending the day at the beach, Jersey City has something to offer students attending schools in the area. In addition to the many entertainment opportunities located in Jersey City itself, the community is close to many popular New York City attractions, including the Statue of Liberty. Additional outings in the Jersey City area include:
  •   Spend a day browsing in the Central Avenue Shopping District
  •   Go ice skating with jolly holiday crowds
  •   Explore the Afro-American History Museum
  •   Stroll along the walkways at the Hackensack Riverfront
  •   Take a short ferry ride into New York City

Schools in Jersey City offer college students the best of both worlds: easy access to a treasure trove of cultural riches in an easy-to-navigate small city environment.
