Industry Drives the Economy of Ohio

Steel Giant: The 34,000 Ohioans working in the industry averaged almost $60,000 annually in 2005, the state's Department of Development reports. Jobs are focused in Butler, Cuyahoga, Defiance, Trumbull and Stark counties. Global steel companies AK Steel, Timken, and Worthington Industries are headquartered in Ohio.

Cars Galore: Ohio's motor vehicle industry ranks second in the nation with $12.6 billion worth of goods produced in 2007. Ohioans built more than 1.48 million cars and light trucks in 2008, led by Honda plants at East Liberty and Marysville.

Machinery Leader: The state is the national leader in manufacture of general purpose machinery. Fortune 500 company Lincoln Electric Holdings in Cuyahoga County employs more than 3,000, and Crown Equipment Corp. in Auglaize County employs more than 2,000.

Food Processing Central: Ohio is well-positioned to service Eastern region customers. As a result, the state's food processing industry shipped $25.6 billion worth of products in 2006. The food processing industry employed more than 60,000 workers in 2006.

Rubber and Plastics: The Akron area is a center for rubber and plastics production. The industry employed 68,900 workers who produced and shipped $17.8 billion worth of goods in 2006. Major employers include Owens Corning and Goodyear Tire & Rubber.
