The community is home to the Naval Station Norfolk, which is the largest naval installation in the world. In recent decades, the traditional focus on military and maritime industries in the area has been supplemented with more cultural and tourism-related jobs, as well. The recent construction of a pier intended to serve cruise ships led to a rapid increase in the number of shopping, dining, lodging, and travel-related businesses in the area.
