The ABCs of Education Degrees

There are few career fields as important as education. It not only affects the quality of life of children and young adults, but it prepares them for today's increasingly professional jobs, and helps to make our nation more competitive.

Working in education requires a passion to inspire and lead, and proper training. That generally includes education degrees.

Working in Education
Except for preschools, whose educational requirements vary, teaching positions, from elementary to secondary education, generally require bachelor of education degrees, and, in some cases, postgraduate degrees. Specializations, such as reading specialist, librarian, English as a Second Language, or special education, typically require specialized education degrees.

Postsecondary teaching positions (part-time or community college level) generally require that you possess at least a master's degree, with full-time professorships and administrative positions usually requiring doctoral degrees.

Non-teaching careers in education may include education administration, library specialist, or school counselor. All of these positions typically require specialized postgraduate degrees.

What To Expect from Education Colleges

While you don't necessarily have to attend an education college to teach, nationally accredited education colleges are the most direct route to earning the proper training and licensing. If you earn a bachelor's degree in another field (for instance, a psychology degree), you would still need to be formally trained and licensed as a teacher in order to work for the K-12 public school system in all 50 states (private school requirements vary).

Teacher licensing involves completing general education coursework, which may include educational psychology, instructional technology, teaching methods, special education, and education philosophy; satisfying courses in a specific major or area of concentration (e.g. math or English); and completing professional education training, which includes student teaching for one semester. Then you must pass an achievement test to earn certification.
