Exploring Faith Through Theology
There has perhaps been no greater catalyst for major historical events than religion. While religious zealotry has at times led to wars and terrorism, it has also spurred wonderful customs that have brought joy, fulfillment, and a sense of community to societies around the world. The exploration of religious faith--its rituals, histories, and teachings--is what is taught in theology schools.

Theology Programs in Depth
While theology schools are most often affiliated with the Catholic church, and the term "theology" has its roots in Christianity, theology students study religions of the world, from Christianity to Protestantism, Judaism, Hinduism, and the Muslim religions. They compare and contrast these faiths, exploring the histories of each and their important texts. Other courses include ethics, Biblical interpretation, theology in America, the history of Christian thought, and liturgical theology and practice. It's common for theology students to also learn another language, such as Hebrew, Greek, Latin, or Arabic. Some theology schools also require that students complete service-learning projects or observe various religious communities; this provides great insight into the work of the clergy, which is the most common career path for theology students.

Those who earn theology degrees should enjoy reading, writing, and engaging in insightful, philosophical discussions about faith. They are often already involved in religious practice, but yearn to have a deeper understanding of religion and make it part of their lives in a real, practical way.

Theology Beyond the Cloth
While those with theology degrees commonly pursue careers in the clergy--as ministers, priests, or rabbis--this is certainly not the only career path available to them. With a theology degree, you have a unique understanding of spirituality, history, and counseling that makes you well suited to academia, marriage and family therapy, youth or senior services, or public service.
